Our Story

As I sit in my office, the story of Skin By Tallow unfolds in my mind, revealing its deep roots and personal significance. It's a tale that reaches back through time, touching on tradition, necessity, and the journey of self-discovery.

The use of animal fat in skincare isn't a passing trend; it's a practice deeply embedded in human history, spanning cultures and generations. For me, it all began with my mother's wisdom, nurtured in the soil of our homeland before our family's journey to America in 1989.

In the quiet corners of what is now Ukraine, a moment of crisis defined our family's relationship with traditional remedies. When my sister suffered severe burns as a child, the lack of medical resources left my mother desperate for a solution. It was then that she encountered an old remedy: rendered goose fat mixed with beeswax. Against all odds, this simple concoction healed my sister's skin without a trace of scarring.

From that moment on, my mother became a steward of this ancient knowledge, crafting balms from animal fats for our family and community. But as we settled into American life, the allure of modernity pulled me away from these ancestral practices. It wasn't until the birth of my own daughter that I rediscovered their value.

Illness has a way of shifting perspectives, and as we embraced a holistic approach to health, the efficacy of animal proteins and fats became undeniable. We returned to tallow balms, recognizing their healing properties and the importance of sourcing the highest-quality ingredients. Yet, in a world where mass production often sacrifices quality for quantity, this proved to be a challenge.

Skin By Tallow was born from this convergence of tradition and necessity. As we launched our small venture, we encountered a range of reactions—from support and encouragement to skepticism and even opposition. But through it all, our commitment to honoring our roots and delivering genuine, effective products remained steadfast.

In every jar of balm we produce, there's a story—a story of resilience, of connection to the land, and of the enduring wisdom passed down through generations. And as we continue on this journey, we invite others to join us in rediscovering the beauty of simplicity and the power of nature's remedies.
